We have designed these tours for Hong Kong residents. They are a little bit different to our normal offering, which is aimed at tourists. These tours assume a basic knowledge of Hong Kong and delve deeper into the history, culture and local stories. We have also built in more visits to more local businesses in order to increase the amount of support going into the local community.
We are offering all residents a 10% discount on tours operated by Hello! Hong Kong. Please quote promo code RESIDENTS when booking.

KOWLOON HISTORY AND MICHELIN FOOD TOUR
Over the course of the tour, we will undertake an in-depth exploration of Kowloon, discovering Michelin rated street food, immersing ourselves in the local culture and learning about Kowloon’s history. We’ll cover everything from the past to the present, explaining Kowloon’s transformation through to the modern day.
Starting in Wong Tai Sin we visit Hong Kong’s most popular temple to learn about the mix of religions underpinning Hong Kong’s culture. We will discover the importance of offerings and fortune telling. Everyone will have the opportunity to try Kau Cim (Chinese Fortune Sticks). Come prepared with a question as the sticks and our local fortune teller will have an answer for you!
We will then visit Kowloon Walled City Park, the former site of the notorious Kowloon Walled City slum. Here we will learn about Kowloon’s history including just how it became a part of the British empire and its transformation through to the modern day. We will find out who lived inside the Kowloon Walled City slum and discover how they made a living.
Our final stop is Sham Shui Po where we will embark on a Michelin rated street food tour! We start with a serving of pork and leek dumplings, thought to bring prosperity to the eater. Freshly made on site every day you will not find a better potsticker!
Next its a portion of silky smooth tofu pudding topped with a spoon full of cane sugar. This tofu is so good that even people that ‘do not like tofu’ love it! In business since 1893 these guys are genuine masters of their craft.
Around the next corner is a local bakery that found its way into the Michelin Guide. Take you pick from bowl puddings, steamed sugar cakes, fried sesame seed balls and more. Heck, why not try them all!
Ending our foodie exploration is a portion of cheong fun, or rice noodle roll. Doused in sweet sauce, sesame sauce and soy sauce this local comfort food will delight. Recommended by the Michelin Guide this is another local eat that you’ll be coming back for more of.
As we make our way around Sham Shui Po we’ll give you a better insight into the real Hong Kong and what life is like for the vast majority of the population, living outside of the expat districts.

HONG KONG ISLAND FOOD & CULTURE TOUR
This is a ‘residents adaptation’ of our Hong Kong food tour which won the TripAdvisor Travellers’ choice award last year.
Over the course of this four hour tour you will learn about the history of food in Hong Kong, from the traditional fare from Guangzhou to the interesting western crossover cuisine that started popping up in the 1950s as local chefs tried to produce cheap versions of British and Western favourites.
We start the day with a traditional Dim Sum breakfast in an old tea house in Sheung Wan. We find ourselves transported back to a bygone era as we sample the most authentic Dim Sum available in HK. This is the granddaddy of Dim Sum restaurants and the Dim Sum is still served via trolley service.
Our next stop is a family run Char Siu (BBQ Pork) shop. Here we will have a look at the kitchen and learn more about the cooking process of our beloved roast meats. They specialise in the sale of whole pigs but, don’t worry, we won’t make you eat an entire one!
Next on the itinerary is a dive into Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr Lam will explain the basic principles of TCM and share some insights into health. Everyone will have a health boosting herbal tea.
Our next stop is a family run Wonton Noodle shop that dates back to the 1960s and is recommended by the Michelin Guide. Wonton Noodles are a simple dish but one that only a true master can perfect. Let us tell you the story of a family feud that led to an intense wonton rivalry.
We will be finishing the tour with a cup of Milk Tea, perhaps the most pervasive legacy of British rule. It’s not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ but it is a fascinating beverage with a wonderful back story. We will enjoy this with one of Fatty Patty’s (Chris Patten’s) favourites, an egg tart.
In addition to the food stops, we also call in at a speciality store to try some preserved ‘candies’ and at an old family-run Soy Sauce producer to learn about the ‘King of Sauces’. We will visit a local Dried Seafood Shop to take a look at the ingredients that are traditionally used in soups. Our aim is to show you how food and culture are deeply linked in Hong Kong.
This tour covers the Sheung Wan, Poho and Central districts of Hong Kong Island. We’ll be throwing in a good dose of history along the way too.
